Chapter 8, Page 3

I'm not real sure where I picked up this photo but it is very similar to the barracks I lived in as a recruit in boot camp. All our worldly possessions were tied up in our sea bags down the center of the barracks. These were two story wood frame barracks with hardwood floors that black marked from our boots.

Saturdays were reserved for cleaning the floors and we referred to them as field days. We would "Johnson Bar" the floors to remove the black marks that built up all week from the heavy foot traffic. I'm not sure what the derivation of the term Johnson Bar is, but it was a tough job removing the marks.

As mentioned in my text, I was assigned to a Naval Training Service School near the Great Lakes Training Station. The small photo below shows me mugging for the camera as well as the sign that is unreadable in the photo below.
