Chapter 9, Page 1

We will jump ahead about 50 years to 1996 when I went to a Ships Reunion in Baton Rouge, LA. This was the second reunion I attended and one that I couldn't miss. The highlight for me was our trip to visit the USS KIDD, a decommissioned and restored Fletcher Class Destroyer. Although it had some differences from the USS LAWS, most things were in the same place and in pretty much the condition that I saw while aboard the LAWS.

We were able to tour all the restored portions of the ship, which brought back many memories. We'll begin the tour with a couple pictures of the bunks in what would have been our sleeping quarters. The image on the upper left shows the bunks in their stowed position. There are three bunks in each tier and under the bottom bunk are the three lockers. In this photo you can see the lockers with the Plexiglas covers installed so that the contents can be viewed. The image on the upper right give you an idea of the size of the compartment with the bunks lowered for use.

My bunk was the top bunk that can be seen in the photo below. I was pretty much elected to go to the top bunk because I was of fairly small stature, which meant that the cramped space I had would be less of a problem.
