Notes for Mabel SAND

The search for Mabel (AKA Mable) began with the 1930 Federal Census for her husband William G. Mathern. This census form listed his wife's name as Mable, born about 1903 in Iowa. Her parent's birth location was listed as Father - Iowa, Mother - New York. Using these criteria in the search I found two people with matching data, Mabel Sand in Marcus Township and Mabel F Kerwin of Dubuque, Iowa.

Since the 1930 Federal Census showed William married to Mabel, and living in Marcus Twp. It is assumed that this is the correct family group. The death record also confirms this information for Mabel Mathern. The California Death Index, which recorded a maiden name of Sands [Sand], provided a date to compare to the SSDI, which showed her last residence being the same as her husband.

John Sand was also the enumerator for the 1930 Federal Census, but Mabel's family has moved to Los Angeles with her father recorded as retired. The family group in California does not include Mabel, again pointing to the fact that perhaps this is the correct person and they took over the farm previously worked by Mabel's family. Subsequent data revealed that the John Sand who enumerated the census was in fact Mabel's brother.
