Notes for Louis Arthur GREENLEE

The search for the parents of David Greenlee, the husband of Cora Aylesworth began by searching for his mother. Since he mothers birth location as Scotland and his birth location as Indiana with a birth year of 1901 it seemed that this would limit the choices. And it did, his fathers birth location seemed to change through several of the census reports, but his mothers remained constant. The final link came when I searched for David's son Louis and found David's fathers obituary.

Arthur and Agnes O. Greenlee are living and farming in Marion Twp, Jasper County, Indiana. They list a son Elmer W. and a daughter Alta C. living with them. Arthur lists his birth location as Tennessee and Agnes as Scotland.

This family group could not be found in the 1910 Federal Census, but based on the obituary for Arthur, which stated that he lived in Porter County for 35 years; it is assumed that they were living in Jasper County up until about 1911. Following this move they are living and farming in Boone Twp., near Hebron, Indiana. Their family has grown and Arthur and Agnes list Elmer, Alta, David, Gladys, Mary, Elizabeth, and Thomas living with them. Elmer and Alta are teaching school and David is listed as a farm laborer, which is presumed to be with his father. It is interesting to note that Arthur now lists his birth location as Pennsylvania, with both parents born in the same state, unlike the 1900 Federal Census in which he reported his birth location as Tennessee. This may be an error on the part of the enumerator as later records indicate Tennessee. There does seem to be a duplication of the census record for David Greenlee. He is clearly listed on the family record as noted above, yet another listing is found for a David Greenlee, age 18, living as a boarder in Gary, Indiana and working as a machinist in a steel factory. This record is dated January 7, 1920 and the family record is dated Jan 21, 1920. It seems likely that David traveled between home and Gary, IN for his work as a machinist and was inadvertently listed in both locations. This supposition is based on the fact that the age reported on both forms matches exactly, age 18, the birth locations match for the individual and for the parents. This goes back to his mother's birth location of Scotland. There is only one Greenlee found in the databases that indicates a female Greenlee, born in Scotland, living in Indiana, and an approximate birth year of 1879. This is mentioned here to aid future researchers who will find multiple entries for David Greenlee in the 1920 Federal Census.

David Greenlee is know to have married in December of 1920 and the 1930 Federal Census records that most of the other children have left home leaving Thomas, now 16, at home and listed as attending school. Their daughter Mary, married at age 17, is living at home with her daughters Ruth and Marjorie Crisman. No mention is made of her husband so further searches are not possible based on the available information.
