Notes for August H. MAST

EDITORS NOTE:

The search for this family group began with Sadie A. Mast, wife of George Melvin Breyfogle. Sadie's name has been supplied by several different sources of family information so we are comfortable that was her given and surname. With nothing more to go on than family records and a few census files that listed her as George's wife I began by searching for all Mast family members living in Iowa during the 1900 census. Sadie was born in 1893 and listed Iowa as he place of birth. The first connection was with the daughter of August named Sada A. and the same birth year. Subsequent searches connected the family group shown here during the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 census periods. None of the information is confirmed beyond these four census files.

August and Louisa Mast, both children of German immigrants, were living in Center Twp., O'Brien County, Iowa during the 1900 census. They reported their birth month and year as well as their first four children.

By 1910 the family had doubled in the number of children and this census form asked for not only the number of children born but the number living. August (AKA Gustav) and Louisa were fortunate enough not to have lost any children with a total of 8 children born and 8 living. The eight child, a daughter named Elsia was listed as being 3/12 or 3 months old. The census form is dated May 2, 1910 so this childs birth month is established whereas the other children only refer to their age at the last birth date. The census form also used the given name of Gustav instead of August, perhaps his original given name. The family had moved to Primghar and August is listed as having no employment. The other interesting fact concerning the date of this form is that Sadie is listed as living at home in May of 1910, just 5 months prior to her marriage to George Melvin Breyfogle in October of 1910.

This family remained residents of Primghar during the 1920 census period with August working as a laborer in a livery barn while his son Charles. J., now 21 years old is working as a repairman in a garage, which is assumed to be an automobile mechanic. Their daughter identified as Linda on the earlier census is now referred to as Malinda, is 24 years old and working as a clerk in a general store. the two oldest daughters, Clara and Sadie and not listed with the family group. Sadie of course married 5 months after the 1910 census was enumerated, but we do not know what happened to Clara, but assume marriage must be the reason she is not living with the family as she would be 29 years old at this census.

When August did not appear on any of the 1930 census forms we searched further and found he had passed away in 1927 and is buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Primghar, IA. We did find reference to Lousia who was listed as head of household and living in Primghar. Her marital status is listed as a widow with no employment. Her sons Frank and Elmer are living at home and both employed. Frank is working as a laborer in an automobile garage and Elmer is working at odd jobs. Charles (AKA Charlie) is living next door with his wife Isabelle and daughter Lenora, and it is possible he and his brother are working for the same garage as Charlie is listed as a mechanic at an automobile garage. Both families report owning a radio set and Charlie is renting his home for $15 per month. Louisa reports owning their home and its estimated value is $500.
