Notes for Abigail C. COWLEY

Abigail placed a newspaper ad in 1897 as follows:

WANTED
A LADY of good address who understands music. Good salary to right party. Call on Miss Abigail W. Cowley, at Mrs. Lonth's boarding house, Delphos, O.

Abigail is living as a boarder with the Laura Abbott family in Chicago where she is employed as a teacher.

The 1930 Federal Census records Abigail living alone, yet her marital status is listed as married, not widowed. Her obituary lists her husband Carl's [Charles] death year as 1936. It is not known where he is listed in 1930. Abigail continues to work as a school teacher and has several boarders living in her home.

Mrs. Abigail C. Henry, 86, a former teacher in Valparaiso and Porter county, died this morning at the Ruff Nursing home in Knox after a lingering illness.
She was born in Watseka, Ill., Nov. 10, 1872, the daughter of Scott and Jennie (Wells) Cowley. In 1908, she was married to Carl Young, who died in 1936. In 1949, she was married to David Henry, who now resides in California.
When Mrs. Henry was two weeks old, her father died and she and her mother moved to Valparaiso. She received her teacher's training at Valparaiso Normal.
Mrs. Henry's first teaching position was at Marshall Grove in Pleasant township. She later taught the 8th grade in Valparaiso. In 1905, she was graduated from the University of Chicago with a PHB degree. Mrs. Henry taught school in Chicago until 1937, when she retired.
She was the author of two books "Over Seventy" and "Under Twenty". She was working on a third book at the time of her death.
She was charter member of the Chicago Longevity club. Mrs. Henry had traveled extensively in the United States, Canada and Mexico. For the past six years she had been an invalid, spending the last two years in the Ruff Nursing home.
Surviving are a half-sister, Mrs. Sadie Breyfogle Aylesworth, Hebron; a half-brother, Fred Breyfogle, Upton, Wyo.; two nephews, Jack Aylesworth, Hebron, and Charles Aylesworth, Crown Point; and one niece, Mrs. Cora Aylesworth Greenlee, Hebron.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Phillips Funeral home in Hebron with the Rev. W. Ray Kuhn, Hebron Methodist church officiating. The body will be taken to Chicago for cremation.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m., Tuesday.
