Notes for Mary Jane JONES

Mary Jane was the youngest daughter of Charles W. Jones and Grace Breyfogle Jones. Her father was, for many years, the only physician in Olathe, Kansas, about 20 miles from Kansas City, so she and her older sister, Kay, grew up in the friendly environment of a small town, but with the advantages of a large city nearby. For example, Mary Jane went regularly to Kansas City for classical violin lessons, and she played expertly throughout her life. She first learned to swim in the waves of the Pacific Ocean – wearing a “scratchy wool bathing suit” – during family vacations in Long Beach, and she later became an excellent swimmer in the lakes and rivers of the Midwest.

She graduated from high school a year early, earned a bachelor's degree in English from Washburn University in Topeka, and did graduate work for a special teaching credential in Northampton, Massachusetts. She was married in 1940 to Jack H. Jones, and after her divorce a few years later, Mary Jane moved to California with their daughter. She taught in the Long Beach Unified School District for 30 years, earning a master's degree from California State University Long Beach in the 1950s. In 1946, she married William R. Braddock, who passed away in 1977, and in 1984 she married Clarence A. Rymarz, her dance partner and constant companion since they met.

Mary Jane was creative – fond of sewing and crafts – and an avid reader. Frequent letters kept her in close contact with friends and family around the world, who often received original poems she had composed for special celebrations, and they knew she'd be the first to offer her support and encouragement in difficult times, too. We remember and honor Mary Jane as a caring person who took great delight in her life and the many people she loved.
