Melvyn Couron
July 5, 1916 - May 27, 2004

G. Melvyn Couron, 87, passed away Thursday afternoon at his North Albany home; his big, kind, loving and giving heart just wore out.

Born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, Melvyn was the eldest son in a loving family of 14 children.

In 1996, his parents, George Sr., and Gaynelle (Emery) Couron, were featured in People magazine as America's longest married couple in the nation at 81 years.

A production planner for a steel corporation before enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Melvyn received his discharge as a Seaman First Class.

He then entered a career in the grocery business, serving as produce manager, store manager and regional manager before retiring after 30 years.

A self-taught fine artist, he loved to paint landscapes and still life. Returning to college, he earned his associate's degree in art from Santa Ana College. He then embarked on his second "dream career" of teaching art for many years at Oakridge School in Orange, Calif., where his three-dimensional "Americana" historical mural is enshrined.

Melvyn married Maxine K. Smith in 1937. They raised children Toni, Brian, Mark and Mel. Maxine died in 1991, and Melvyn married Neta Fern Martin of Albany in 1997.

A member of Albany First Christian Church and the Order of Eagles, Melvyn became an avid gardener after moving to Oregon.

Survivors who will miss Melvyn dearly include his second wife, Neta Martin-Couron of Albany; daughters Toni Sayers of Springfield, Mo., and Luessia Thomason of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; sons Brian Couron of Orange, Calif., Mark Couron of Laguna Hills, Calif., Mel Couron of Chino, Calif., Larry Martin of Medford and Leon Martin of Albany; nine brothers and sisters; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
