Notes for George Israel BREYFOGLE

George Israel Breyfogle, unmarried at the time, was living in Overland Park, Johnson, Kansas and self employed as a farmer. He listed his mother, Mary A. Breyfogle, as his nearest living relative. His height was recorded as tall with a slender build, and brown eyes and hair.

The 1930 Federal Census for Mission, Johnson, Kansas found George and his wife living on Curtis Street and he was listed as a real estate agent.

George I. Breyfogle, 76, of 10730C Greenwood, Overland Park, senior partner in the Breyfogle Development Company, which developed most of the Overland Park downtown area, died Thursday at the Mission Municipal Hospital in Mission, Tex., where he owned a citrus farm.

Mr. Breyfogle was descended from the pioneer Breyfogle family that moved to Johnson County from Ohio before 1870. He grew up on his father's dairy farm near what is now 87th and Metcalf in the heart of the residential and business area that developed rapidly in the years following World War II.

His father, the late Lewis Breyfogle, was the brother of the late John William Breyfogle, Sr., a land developer who served on the board of the former State Bank of Olathe, now Patrons State Bank & Trust Co.

The Breyfogle property in Johnson County was divided among family members. Mr. Breyfogle's dairy land was soon sold for housing sites, there was a residential waiting list for the housing sites, and Mr. Breyfogle had to hire crews of 75 persons to meet the demand. The housing sites were later cleared away and the business district of downtown Overland Park developed.

Mr. Breyfogle was a member of the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Businessmen's Association. He was an Army veteran of World War I and a member of the Dwight Cowles American Legion Post. He was a member of the 40 & 8 Society and was a Mason. He was a member of the Overland Park Christian Church.

Mr. Breyfogle attended the University of Kansas. He was the first president of Overland Park Savings & Loan and a former board member.

He also leaves his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Breyfogle of the home, and a sister, Mrs. Hilma Casida, Grove, Okla. Services will be at 8 p.m. Monday at the Newcomer Overland Park Chapel, where friends may call after 5 p.m. Monday. The family suggests contributions to the church or to the Johnson County chapter of the American Cancer Society.
