Aug. 31, 1922 - Sept. 4, 2002

Lyle R. Paris, 80, Boone, died Wednesday at Boone Country Hospital of complications of a stroke. He was born Aug. 31, 1922, near Fraser in Boone County, the son of Martin H. and Ethel P. (Martz) Paris. He married Doris Irene Majors March 7, 1942, at Bethany, MO.

He attended school in Fraser, pilot Mound and Boone and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a carpenter with the carpenter's union in Des Moines, then worked as a construction superintendent for R. H. Grabau Construction of Boone for 28 years. He then worked in the carpenter shop at Iowa State University until his retirement. He was a member of the Central Christian Church of Boone, serving on various committees and boards and as a deacon and a trustee. He also was a member of the Lions Club of Boone and was a past member of the Eagles Lodge and the Moose Lodge of Boone. His hobbies included gardening and harvesting walnuts and cleaning them in his old washing machine. He also enjoyed watching stock car races at the Boone Speedway and watching the Iowa State University football team at its home games. He enjoyed fishing for catfish and bullheads in the Des Moines River, in the Blue Earth River and the Chipawah River in Minnesota and in lakes around Boone and in northern, central and southern Iowa. He also enjoyed helping his children with any remodeling and building jobs and watching local sporting events in Boone.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Boyd, Leo and John; four sisters, Florence Bushore, Carrie Ellen Carpenter, Verla Elsberry Bushore and Lorraine Carpenter; and one son-in-law, Gerald D. Bennett. Survivors include his wife; five daughters and fou sons-in-law, Charlotte A. Bennett of Boone, Delores "Dee" and Richard VanDePol of Boone, Sheryl L. "Sherry" and Terry Johnson of Boone, Dianna (Annie) and Dean Walter of Apple Valley, MN, and Lori and Roger Sebring of Boone; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Lyle L. "Butch" and Charlene Paris of Boone and Gary Paris of Boone; one sister-in-law, Maxine Paris of Boone; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11: a.m. Monday at Central Christian Church with the Rev. Dr. Ron Franklin officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

Friends may call at Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, 503 Story St., Boone, Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m. The family will be present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation continues Monday at the church from 9 a.m. until time of services.

Memorials may be given to Central Christian Church.

Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
