Notes for Marvin Dean PATTERSON

Editors note:

In a conversation with Pat at a family reunion it was learned that as a young man of 15 [about 1949] he cut timber with a buck saw and hand split it into props (supports) for the Conway Mine just east of Fraser, IA. Conway Mine consisted of two soft coal mines, one was a slope cut [open pit mining] and the other was a shaft mine. The props were of course used in the shaft mine. Pat lived with his mother and father at the top of Wilson Hill that had a substantial wooded area of white oak and elm. The props were either provided in the round as they grew as small trees or the larger timber was split into 4 to 6 inch square posts. These ranged in length from 3 ½ foot to 5 foot. When asked if he could remember how much he made from the sale he replied, "Not much, a guy could work hard all day for $5.00."
