William and Mary are shown as having been married for 26 years, indicating a year of marriage of 1874. This suggests that oldest daughter Mary Alice may have been Mary's child from an earlier marriage. The 1880 census states that Allace was born in England. In the 1900 census, her birth place is shown as Illinois. In either case, her birth in 1870 pre-dates the marriage of this William and Mary and falls in the year when this William was still shown as living with his parents.
