Notes for Joseph A. MYERS

Joseph A. Myers

Submitter writes:

"Our grandfather was Frank M. Myers, his father was Joseph A. Myers and Joseph's father was Alexander B. Myers. It is written in the bible that Joseph A. Myers was born in Canada Dundee. It took Maxine (sister to writer) quite a while to locate Canada Dundee. But she discovered Joseph A. Myers was born April 27, 1848 in Dundee Township, Huntindon Province of Quebec Canada. Dundee is just across the border from Fort Covington, Franklin County new York and families seem to travel freely between the two towns according to a researcher."

Submitter writes:

Alexander and family moved to Delaware County, IA in 1863 and Joseph enlisted in the Union Army Feb. 11, 1864. He was a private in Co. K 35 IA and Co K 12th IA infantry. In April at Alexandria, Louisiana he was taken ill, later put on the hospital boat and taken to a Memphis hospital. He was discharged Oct. 8, 1864 in Iowa.

Contributor writes:

"Because of Joseph's health problems he found it difficult to work full time. He had a draying business and livery stable...one horse. His Civil War file is filled with Doctor reports and affidavits as he tried to secure an Army pension. His pension was granted, but he died from chronic cystitis and kidney disease before he was informed. Joseph died Jan 13, 1883 in Belle Plaine, Scott County, MN and his obituary reads, "J. A. Myers age 35 years. Funeral took place Monday from the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Myers leaves a wife and three grown up children besides many friends in this vicinity to mourn his loss". "

Contributor writes:

Joseph died at age 35, apparently worn out at last by an illness he contracted during the Civil War. He joined at age 15, and was ill within months of joining. His pension file tells a bleak story of 20 years of pain and illness prior to his death. His son, Frank, was only 13 when his father died, leaving him the man in the family. Oddly enough, Joseph's obituary referred to his 'three grown children', one of which was Frank.
