Notes for Edmond Alfred PORTNER

Edmond Portner, living in Scotland, SD, registered for the WWI Draft and listed his birth location as Locle, Switzerland and indicated he was a naturalized citizen. Family documents record the exact location as Le Locle, Switzerland. He listed himself as a self-employed farmer in Hutchinson County South Dakota. He was single at this time and listed his father and mother as dependents. He also listed that he had been an infantry private in the military for two months. This service was in Switzerland. He listed his build as slender with medium height, gray eyes and dark brown hair.

Edmond emigrated the Swiss Romande when he was 22, met Mary Bevins in Iowa at a thresher's dinner. They married and moved to South Dakota where Edmond farmed.

Edmond played the accordion beautifully and played for dances. He related that in Switzerland, after playing for dances, he and the other musicians would go to the top of the mountain and drink wine and play their instruments until sunrise.
