Notes for George Harrison BEVINS

Contributor writes:

George Bevins was born April 13, 1853 in England according to Grace. He was Grace Crone's father. He married Lillian Belle Johnson and they had ten children: Stella, Aarin, Grace, William, Verma Bell, Clifford, James, Lewis, Ralph, and Bertha.

In the 1870 census, he is listed in the immigrants William and Mary household and is shown as having been born in Ohio. His profession is shown as domestic servant. In 1880, he is no longer a member of this household. There is a George Bevins still in Annawan township, though, listed in the census at household no. 69, right after immigrant William's household, no. 67, and son William's household, no. 68. This George Bevins is listed as 25 years old, close to the 27 years old that a birth date of 1853 suggests. The census indicates this George was born in Ohio, consistent with the 1870 census. This George is listed with wife Charlot, 18 and son Joseph born in July 1879. Charlot is listed as born in New York and her son is listed as born in Iowa.

Illinois state records show the marriage of a George Bevins to Charlotte J. House in Henry County on December 30, 1877. It is possible that this is a first marriage for George and that he subsequently divorced Charlotte to marry Lillian Belle Johnson by 1891 as indicated by Grace. The first child of that marriage was born in April 1892. A search of divorce records may help here. It is not known where the marriage of George and Lillian Belle occurred - it is not listed in the Illinois state records.
