Notes for William A. BEVINS

Contributor writes:

William A. Bevins was born June 12, 1843 in England. Grace remembers that he married a Mary, last name unknown, and that they had five children: Alice, Phoebe, Lizzie, Sir and Sam.

Grace recalls that William hooked up his team of horses one day, drove away and never came back.

In the 1870 census, he is also listed as a domestic servant.

By 1880, William, 36, was the head of his own household with wife Mary, 33, and five children: Allace,10; Simon, 5; Elisabeth, 4; Nellie, 2: and Feebe, born in May 1880. William's occupation is shown as farmer. While there's no guarantee that this William is the son of immigrants William and Mary Bevins, this William's age is correct and his birth place is shown as England. He is living next to the older Bevins. Plus, the names of his wife and most of his children coincide with Grace Crone's recollection. The census indicates his wife Mary and oldest daughter Allace were born in England.

In the 1900 census, the family consists of children Mary A., 29; Simon, 25; Elizabeth, 24; Nellie M., 22; Phebe, 20; and Samuel, 18.6 William and Mary are shown as having been married for 26 years, indicating a year of marriage of 1874. This suggests that oldest daughter Mary Alice may have been Mary's child from an earlier marriage. The 1880 census states that Allace was born in England. In the 1900 census, her birth place is shown as Illinois. In either case, her birth in 1870 pre-dates the marriage of this William and Mary and falls in the year when this William was still shown as living with his parents.

There is no known record for their marriage in Illinois which will make determining wife Mary's last name difficult. With a full name, immigration records might reveal when wife Mary arrived in the U.S. and whether Mary Alice immigrated with her mother.

In the 1900 census, William is listed as having been naturalized. Perhaps more information on his family is available in this record. The census form also shows that William was a renter of his farm.

By 1910 and again in 1920, this family is no longer in Annawan township.
