Notes for Elsie Estella FOOSE

ON MONDAY of last week a gentlewoman of Finney County was buried in Valley View Cemetery. It was our great fortune to meet her about 30 years ago, through her daughters, and we count acquaintance with her through the years as one of treasures.

ELSIE (Mrs. Beecher) Breyfogle lived quietly and serenely for the greater part of her 85 years on a ranch up in the far reaches of north Finney County. She didn't come into town often; for many years the rural mail carrier brought her main contact with the rest of the world and, later, the telephone kept her in touch with family and friends.

But Elsie Breyfogle was in no way out of touch with the happenings and trends of the times. She read a lot and thought and discussed. Probably the most outstanding thing about her was her use of and love for language. She used it eloquently and her vocabulary was something to behold.

Talking to her on the phone or getting a note from her always was a treat in words.

THE EDUCATION that Beecher and Elsie's four daughters received in eight years in a one-room school was augmented
at home where grammar and the meaning and use of words were daily lessons. And thus the mother imparted to everyone
around her esteem for learning. The country girls were more than adequately prepared for high school classes
in town. They had been guided to read deeply and widely. At her kitchen table when work was slow in the winter months, Mrs. Breyfogle taught a hired hand to read and write.

A SMALL, pretty woman of grace and culture. Elsie Breyfogle lived far from the madding crowd. She was not an ordinary woman.

At this time of year when most people you meet tell you they are "swamped" or "snowed" or busy beyond belief, we think of Elsie Breyfogle. We can hear her say, "I know, my dear, you must truly be beleaguered."
