Notes for William Langford BEVINS

Contributor writes:

William Bevins was born March 4, 1815 in England. The family believes he was born in or around the city of Leicester although this has not been confirmed. Nothing is known about his growing up.

In about 1837, William married Mary Bork (last name unconfirmed), born August 19, 1822 in England. It is not known exactly where she was born. Nothing is known about her youth.

It is not known exactly when the William Bevins family emigrated from England. The 1900 census, if accurate, suggests it was in 1845. Neither their port of sail nor their destination is known. If they can be located, passenger lists may eventually reveal more.

From the birth dates of their children and based on the 1870 census listing of their birth places, it appears the family lived somewhere in Ohio from George's birth in 1853 until some time between late 1855 and early 1857 before Julia's birth in Illinois. If they went directly to Ohio after arriving in 1845, they may be found in the Ohio 1850 census.

It appears the Bevins family arrived in Illinois before Julia's birth on September 22, 1857. The 1860 census may confirm this. William Bevins is listed as a farmer in the 1870 census and wife Mary is identified as keeping house.

It is not known whether William or Mary was ever naturalized as they died before the censuses that asked this question.

Mary died July 3, 1878 in Illinois and is buried in Fairview Cemetery. Her marker indicates she died at the age of 55 years, 11 months and 12 days.

The 1880 census shows William, 65, as a widower5, living with children Samuel, Julia and James.

Family information suggested that William also lived in Iowa. Based on the census information found to date, it appears that William and Mary stayed in Illinois after arriving in the 1850's.

William died June 17, 1889 in Illinois and is buried in Fairview Cemetery.
