Notes for James BEVINS

Contributor writes:

James Bevins was born November 22, 1864 in Illinois. On November 8, 1897, he married Elizabeth Hunter White of Sac City, Iowa in Slayton, Murray County, Minnesota. Elizabeth was born in Glasgow, Scotland on August 31, 1879 to James A. White and Jean Elizabeth Hunter.

They had six children: Mary, Tom, Sam, fraternal twins Julia and Jane, and Allen.

It is not known at what point James moved to Iowa or whether he went alone or with other family members. He is shown in Annawan township in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. By 1900, he is no longer living in Annawan. A Minnesota newspaper notice of James' marriage to Elizabeth suggests he was living in Iona township in Murray county, Minnesota at the time of the wedding.

At some point, the family moved to (or back to) Cherokee County, Iowa as their first child, Mary Frances, was born in Sheridan Township, Cherokee County on November 30, 1898. (This differs from the 1899 birth date indicated on Mary's cemetery marker. ) They were still in Cherokee County when their last son Allen was born in 1913.

Great granddaughter Marilyn Woodward Blumell believes they had moved back to Illinois by 1924. He died on November 21, 1932 and is buried in Fairview Cemetery south of Annawan. His wife Lizzie died March 24, 1944 and is also buried in Fairview Cemetery.
