Notes for John William BREYFOGLE, III

Giving Up 57,738 Pennies, He Quits 10-Year Hobby

Remember the zinc-colored pennies, which were issued in 1943? The Federal Reserve bank here took in 57,738 of the coins yesterday.

They were turned in by a 21-year-old University of Kansas senior who had been collecting them since he was 11. It was one of the largest single deposits of the "lead" pennies made at the bank, and certainly the largest in recent years.

The student, Bill Breyfogle, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Breyfogle of Olathe, was accompanied on, the trip to Kansas City by Robert Manning, of the Patrons Co-Operative bank at Olathe.

There were, eight bags of the pennies, each weighing about 55 pounds.

Bill had been saving them in milk bottles - 42 bottles to be exact.

There were two main reasons for abandoning the coin collection, Bill "said:

"The bank is paying interest rates of 3 per cent. On $577.38 that can add up," he said. "Then my mother was worrying about the shelves in my room collapsing with the weight of all those milk bottles."
