Notes for Kate Elizabeth BOAS

EDITORS NOTE: It would seem that finding Kate's family would be relatively easy based on the clues given in the biographical sketch of her husband Sylvanus. But regardless of the search criteria nothing definitive has come to light. There are two potential families living in Reading, PA at the time that may be her direct family. We present this data in the hope that other researchers may be able to shed light on the connection.

Family #1
1860 Federal Census Northwest Ward, Reading, Berks, PA

Name Age Occupation Birthplace
Augustus Boas 47 Bank President Pennsylvania
Emma Boas 43 Pennsylvania
Sallie 21 Pennsylvania
Edward 19 Pennsylvania
Emma 15 Pennsylvania
Matilda 11 Pennsylvania
Kate 8 Pennsylvania

The father's name, Augustus, does not seem to line up with the F. G. Boas named in the biography, but the daughter Kate and her age of 8 seems to be a perfect match. This would make her born in about 1852, which lines up with later census files showing Kate as the wife of Sylvanus.

Family #2
1860 Federal Census Spruce Ward, Reading, PA

Name Age Occupation Birthplace
Frederick S. Boas 25 Lumber Merchant Pennsylvania
Rose Boas 29 Pennsylvania
John K. 9/12 Pennsylvania
Catharine Boas 29 Pennsylvania (Insane)

In this case the head of the family has a name that is much closer to the father listed in the biography, F. G. versus F. S. Kate is not listed and based on more recent census data it doesn't seem likely that she would be attached. The reason we record this family group is that in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 federal census files the Rev. S. C. Breyfogel and his wife Kate are living a few houses from family #2. It may be possible that Frederick S. is the son of Augustus, making Kate his brother.

The link between these families grows stronger by viewing the 1880 Federal Census for Reading. Family 2, headed by Frederick S. Boas, records his sister Clara E. Austin living with them. Referring back to the 1860 census, Augustus Boas had a daughter Clara E. and her age comes out the same. This leads me to think that Kate is probably connected to Family #1 as a daughter and Family #2 as a sister.

We are not recording parents and siblings for Kate at this time since there is no confirmation of this connection. The information provided above is provided as support for future research.
