Notes for Edwin Solomon BREYFOGLE

BREYFOGLE, EDWIN S., San Francisco, California, was born in Columbus, Ohio, June 10, 1854, a son of Charles and Matilda (Cloud) Breyfogle. His early and literary education was acquired in the public and high schools of Columbus, Ohio. In 1872 he took a course in Starling Medical College, Columbus, Ohio, and spent the next two years in the Hahnemann Medical College of Philadelphia, graduating in March, 1875, prizeman of his class.

He commenced practice in San Jose, California, in 1875, in association with his brother, Charles W. Breyfogle, deceased. In 1884 he removed to San Francisco, where he has since been engaged in practice. Dr. Breyfogle took a post-graduate course of two terms in the New York Post-Graduate School of Medicine and also studied abroad two years in Berlin and Vienna principally.

He was a member of the first state board of examiners in California, serving two terms. He also held membership in the California State Homeopathic Medical Association, but resigned from that organization. Dr. Breyfogle married May Folger, daughter of Daniel W. Folger of San Francisco, and eight years after her death he married Sophie McPherson, a daughter of William McPherson of St. Louis, Missouri.

EDITORS NOTE: The marriage date to Sophie is not documented, this article would place the marriage in 1903, more research is needed.

Lewis Breyfogle and his brother Beecher Breyfogle visited San Francisco in 1909 and writes of this visit:

"He was out of town at the time, but we saw the swank downtown hotel where he lived and his downtown office. Everyone seemed to know him, including our Chinatown guide, and he was known to be both successful and well-to-do. Apparently he left no descendants."

Prior to his first marriage, Edwin is living in San Jose with his brother Charles W. Breyfogle in San Jose, CA. He is listed as a physician.

Sophie and Edwin are shown on the 1900 Federal Census for San Francisco, Palace Hotel as boarders, presumably in the "swank downtown hotel" that Lewis described above.

Sophie and Edwin were shown on the 1910 Federal Census for San Francisco and they were listed as boarders and it is assumed that this was the Palace Hotel even though the census form did not indicate this.

Dr. Edwin S. Breyfogle was listed as having an office at 209 Geary Stree, Palace Hotel, San Francisco, CA, occupation Homoepathic Physician.

Edwin's wife Sophie was listed in the 1921/22 Palo Alto city directory and no mention is made of Edwin. It is assumed that he had passed away prior to publication.
