EDITORS NOTE:
There is some confustion about this name, the History of Berks county indicates that the Great-grandfather of Sylvanus C. Breyfogle was Solomon B. Breyfogel. It also indicates that Solomon had a son George B. Breyfogle that was the father of Sylvanus. The fact that George married Solomon's wife upon his death leads me to believe this is where the confusion lies.

In the Lewis Breyfogle work he discusses George's appearance as follows: "he looked to be considerably taller, [taller than Solomon] with noticeably large and hadsome features."

Lewis based this description on ink silhouette drawings shown to him in 1907 or 1908.

His description of George continues:

"George worked hard also, (everyone had to in those days) he was as much a playboy as the times permitted. A handsome fellow, who liked girls, but stayed single until he was about 37, something almost unheard of in those days."

George and Esther lived on George, Sr.'s farm and Lewis writes:

"George and Esther continued to live on the big farm, most of which George Breyfogle, Sr. conveyed to them in 1822, five years before his death in 1827. They apparently lived on the place until 1849, when the land was sold to the Schaeffer family - 164 acres, plus a fractional acre for the sum of $16,490.37."

Lewis continues:

George, Jr. and Esther moved in 1849 from the old farm in Maxatawny Township to Oley Township, also in Berks County. We do no know how long they lived there, but eventually they went to Reading to live, apparently to be near their children. Or, since Esther died in 1860, George, Jr. might have retired from the farm at that time, at the age of 78, to live out his remaining 15 years in Reading."

Lewis continues:

We know little of George and Esther's life other than is related in the Genealogy. They must have farmed extensively, because, in 1831, they built the immense 50' X 80' stone barn on the old farm, which is still in use. It may have also been George who built the race track of sea shells, described by the Schaeffers, who followed him in ownership of the farm."

Using the census data and comparing to established dates from other researchers it is our best guess that George and Esther were living in Maxatawny Township, Berks County, PA during the 1840 Federal Census period. The records through 1840 contain the name of the head of household and then the numbers of males and females living in that household. Using the established dates we know that the family would have been close to the ages listed below at the time of the 1840 census. We also know that the age reported on the census as of their last birthday prior to a specific date during the census period, so actual age may be off by as much as a year. Ages for the family were approximately:

George B. age 58
Esther age 58
Sylvia age 20
Charity age 19
Seneca age 17
Helen age 16
Esther age 15
Clarissa age 12

The family listed under the name of George Breyfogel (no middle name or initial) included the following:

1 - Male 15 - 20, assumed to be Seneca
1 - Male 50 - 60, assumed to be George B.
1 - Female 5 - 10, assumed to be Clarissa
2 - Females 10 - 15, assumed to be Helen and Esther
2 - Females 15 - 20, assumed to be Sylvia and Charity
1 - Female 50 - 60, assumed to be Esther

George and Esther are living in Oley Township, Berks County, Pa with their daughters Helena and Esther. Also living in the household are William Sheaffer (age 14) and Eliza Brown age 12. It is unknown what relationship they have to George and Esther.
