Notes for Osman S. BREYFOGLE

Osman was mentioned in an article that retold the story of the Lost Breyfogle Mine.

Excerpts:

Some writers of the legend insist it was Charles C. Breyfogle, one-time assessor and treasurer of Alameda County, and founder of the short-lived mining town of Geneva near Austin, Nev., who discovered the rich ore.

But Osman S. Breyfogle of San Carlos, says the discoverer was Jacob Breyfogle, cousin of his grandfather, William O. Breyfogle.

"Before Jacob's death in Salt Lake city from affects of a poisoned arrow, he gave a sample of the ore and a map to my grandfather." William had grubstaked Jacob to the tune of $10,000 on one of his expeditions to search for the lost ledge of gold.

Osman Breyfogle says the map and the ore specimens have been lost, the former probably burned when somebody in the family cleaned out a cupboard.

Neither William O. or his son William R. Breyfogle (Osman's father) got around to looking for the lost ledge of gold, but some old-timers have spent most of their lives in the search for the lost Breyfogle, a legend that refuses to die. - P.L.
