Notes for Johann Petar BREYVOGEL

EDITORS NOTE: Most of the very early information about John Peter, his children, and his immegration is based on the work of Flora Grumman and Lewis Breyfogle. There is little documentation that we have found that supports or refutes their findings. It is not the position of this editor to disbelieve the early family history work but to continue trying to document it.

In regard to the exact spelling of John's first, middle, and last name, we can only go by what is found in public records since we have not seen any original records showing the name itself. A search of www.ancestry.com for the surname of Breyvogel yielded the following information:

Name: Johan Peter Breyvogel
State: PA
County: Philadelphia County
Township: Philadelphia
Year: 1744
Database: PA Early Census Index

This was a state census file that yielded the spelling of the first name that differs from what the early researchers used.

Johann Petar Breyvogel was found on List 1060, dated 20th O'ber, 1744, at the Phildelphia Courthouse.
Present: Edward Shippen, Mayor
Wm. Allen, Recorder
Ben. Shoemaker
Septimus Robinson
Robert Strethill

The foreigners whose names are underwritten, imported in the Phoenix-William Wilson, Capt., from Rotterday, and last from Cowes, did this day take the foregoing Oaths of the Government.

Joh. Peter Breyvogel

EDITORS NOTE: In the writing by L. W. Breyfogle he states "for a matter of further interest, we give you below a list of their names. There were 107 signatures, some by mark (X). Note that John Peter apparently was literate and could sign his name. He signed it 'Breyvogel'. The total ship's load was 165, of which 110 were male and 65 female. Three males were apparently under 16.

EDITORS NOTE: The on-line resource, www.ancestry.com, shows a reference to the passenger list of the Phoenix for John Peter. It indicates that the name was taken from original manuscripts in the state archives. It also lists a Source Bibliography as William Henry Egle, Editor of "Names of Foreigners Who Took the Oath of Allegiance to the Province and State of Pennsylvania, 1727 - 1775.

"In 1752, or thereabouts, the first tax rolls in Berks County show a Peter Breifogel on the Ruscomb Manor Township tax list. In 1758, the same Peter Breifogel shows up on the tax rolls of Rockland Township. This must have been John Peter, as his son Peter (born 1746) was not old enough to pay taxes at the time."

"There was also the daughter of John Peter, who married a man by the name of Row. (This is generally spelled as 'Rowe'), and she probably has dozens of descendants."

Flora Grumman speculates on the death date of Johann Petar:

"At the court house in Reading is the record of Jacob Breyvogel, adminiistrator of Peter Breyvogel, June 17, 1789, by bond of George Breyvogel, filed October 17, 1796."

Flora Grumman mentions a daughter for Johann Petar and that she married a 'Row', but offers no other information.

She also mentions:

"Some records indicate a son John in place of Solomon, but as there is nothing recorded other than the name he probably died young."

She does not give the source of the records she referred to and research has not established if this person existed.
