Notes for Charles BREYFOGLE

EDITORS NOTE:
In studying the 1900 Federal Census concerning Charles Breyfogle and his extended family we are drawn to the number of Cunningham's involved with this family.

The first child of Charles and his first wife Elizabeth Suzanne Cunningham was Harriet Helen Breyfogle who married "a Cunningham." This information came from Flora Grumman's work, repeated in the Lewis W. Breyfogle work. The 1910 census lists George O. Cunningham as the spouse of Harriet H, and he is listed as the son in law of Charles. Both Charles and George are listed as Truck Farmers, which lines up with the Flora Grumman and Lewis W. Breyfogle work.

Charles is listed with a spouse name Helina, which we assume is his second wife Helen S. Cunningham, a name found in the Flora Grumman work. To further add to the number of Cunningham's associated with the record we found Lillian H. Cunningham as a boarder with this family, her birth date was recorded as August 1869 and she is listed as being single and has no employment listed. Her parent's birth location, Ohio, matches Helen S. (Cunningham) Breyfogle's. It is very possible that these two were sisters and perhaps George was a brother to them.

Lewis Breyfogle writes:

"The story of the death of Daniel and his wife and daughter on the overland trail to California is given in the Genealogy [Flora Grumman work]. I had known of this before I was aware that the Genealogy existed. this is because on of Daniel's three boys, who survived, Charles (born 1836) was the same age as my grandfather, his first cousin, and in later years Charles used to visit his Kansas relatives. It was there that I saw him when I was a small boy."

Flora Grumman describes the work of Charles Breyfogel:

"He lived near West Pullman, now a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, and was highly respected in the community."

Lewis Breyfogle describes the life work of Charles:

"He is widely known market gardener, and had his main operation in the Crown Point, Indiana area, adjacent to Chicago. Even prior to 1900, he had his land irrigated and underdrained, and he employed a large number of people in his project. His sons carried on the work, we understand, including Oscar (1870 - 1958)."

Lewis Breyfogle desribes Charles' appearance as "dark-complexioned with light eyebrows."
