Notes for Roland Charles BREYFOGLE

The 1850 and 1860 census files refer to this child as Charles R, yet he enlisted under the name Roland. In his father's letters home during the civil war, Joshua D. refers to him as Roland or Roll and does not refer to the middle name or initial. The 1860 census shows Roland employed as a clerk, in letters written in 1861 Joshua refers to his other sons working for merchants in Delaware and one wonders if this was the same merchant, possibly a general store.

Joshua D. Breyfogle, Jr. reported to his sons that his brother Roland, "was made an officer in the Regular Army by General Grant, for bravery at the terrible Battle of the Wilderness, in rescuing our Flag from the Rebels." This is not mentioned by the source above, but is part of Joshua's recollections of the war written in letter format on March 27, 1903.

R. C. Breyfogle of Delaware, Ohio is mentioned in a book titled, "HISTORY OF DELAWARE AND OHIO" published in 1880. We offer this short excerpt with the assumption that the R. C. Breyfogle mentioned is Roland Charles Breyfogle, son of Joshua D. Breyfogle:

"The One Hundred and Eighty-sixth Infantry drew one company from Delaware County. Company B was recruited almost wholly in the county, and was mustered in, under the following commissioned officers: R. C. Breyfogle, Captain; O. H. Barker, First Lieutenant, and Shadrack Hubbell, Second Lieutenant. Lieut. Hubbell was a son of Hon. J. R. Hubbell, of Delaware, and was but eighteen years of age when he enlisted in the army. He raised most of this company, many of its members being his schoolmates, and, in acknowledgment of his services, he was made Second Lieutenant of the company. After the close of the war, he was commissioned in the regular army, and died at New Orleans, in 1867, of yellow fever. He was on Gen. Hancock's staff at the time of his death."

Mary B. (Reynolds) Breyfogle, Roland's mother, applied for her son's civil War survivors Pension on August 19, 1870, which leads us to assume that his death was related to his service during the civil war. Lewis W. Breyfogle noted his death was the result of wounds from a civil war battle.
