Notes for Rosella N. BREYFOGLE

EDITORS NOTE:

The 1850 and 1860 census records the oldest child of Joshua and Mary with a given name of Rosilla N. or Rosella N. and in both census files her age lines up with previous family history research. The 1860 census file records a middle initial of M or N (rather stylized penmanship), which leads us to believe the enumerator did not know how to spell Imogene. During the civil war years her father Joshua refers to her many times as Imogene and the burial record is under this name with no reference to a middle name. At the death of their son Arthur, Joshua in a letter to Mary, writes, "but Mary you know that we have been very highly favored by providence while our neighbors and friends have lost children, fathers and mothers, we have been free from death and almost sickness." This passage leads us to believe that they had not, up to this point, lost any children as was so common in the middle of the 19th century, so the only conclusion to be drawn is that Rosella N. or M. Breyfogle is in fact Imogene. We have corrected this record to reflect the given name on the census files but realize that all family history information records her as Imogene.
