Notes for George BREYFOGEL

"George Breyfogel is listed in the Pennsylvania Annals, Volume 6, Page 278, as being in Captain Jacob Rothermel's company" during the Revoloutionary War."

"There is a Recolutionary War Service Insignia on George Breyfogel's grave in St. John's Reformed Church burial ground, Kutztown."

It is suspected that George "was a citizen of substance and repute is attested to by the fact that in the organization of Kutztown, he was one of the town's first two supervisors, and from 1819 to 1821 (he was 72 to 74 years of age at the time), he was Chief Burgess. Also, a tax list is signed by him as assessor. This information is from the "History of Berks County" by M. L. Montgomery.

"We do not have a detailed record of George's land holdings, but probably, one of the last farms that he acquired was one of 305 acres and 90 perches (an acre is said to be 160 perches), bought March 9, 1797 from Donald Beaver, Sr. and wife, Sibilia for 3300 pounds. (This was a tremendous sum in those days - - about $20,000)"

EDITORS NOTE: Lewis Breyfogle included detailed directions for finding the farm mentioned in this transcription. The description cover three pages and can be found in his writings on page 21, 22, and 23.

Flora Grumman writes of George's will:

George Breyvogel's will made June 25, 1822, was probated October 26, 1827. He mentions his sons Jacob D. and George, gives L350 to be divided equally among the children of his deceased son Solomon, gives L500 to daughter Catharine and L373 to daughter Esther.

Editors Note:

There is some confustion about this name, the History of Berks county indicates that the Great-grandfather of Sylvanus C. Breyfogle was Solomon B. Breyfogel. It also indicates that Solomon had a son George B. Breyfogle that was the father of Sylvanus. The fact that George married Solomon's wife upon his death leads me to believe this is where the confusion lies.

It is noted in the Lewis Breyfogle work that the inscription on the tomb stone is in German.
