Notes for George Peter BREYFOGLE

George P. Brifogel [Breyfogle] is listed in the 1840 federal census, age between 30 and 40, with his wife of the same age range along with children as follows:

1 - Male child 5 or under
1 - Female child between 5 and 10
1 - Male child between 10 and 15
1 - Female child between 10 and 15

Since there are no further details it is impossible tell if this is the same person discussed here, but the parent ages line up and although the children's ages do not align perfectly it is assumed to be the correct family group.

George was living in Delaware, Ohio and was employed as a Sawyer and it appears as though they had a Caroline Saza***d living with them that had a birth place listed as Germany.

The 1860 Federal Census shows George as a Carpenter, but he appears to be living alone. He appears on the same census page as the Ohio State Penitentiary, but is clearly not an inmate. There is nothing to indicate he works directly for the prison, but the entry on this sheet makes one feel as though he is some way employed there or working on its construction. More research is needed to clarify why he is not listed with the rest of his family. He is age 54 at this census and his youngest child would have been 12.

George P. and Sarah Breyfogle, now 65 years old are living in Columbus, Ohio and George is working for a carpenter. Sarah is listed as keeping house and their daughters, Ellen and Sarah are living at home working for a dress maker. Also living in the same household are their daughter Margaret and her husband John Strickler and their daughters Louisa B., age 2, and Frances M., age 1. John is listed as working for a cabinetmaker with Margaret keeping house. There is an additional family living in the same household, Otis L. and Martha L. Harvey [may be Hearvy or Heavy]. Their ages do not seem to line up with the other Breyfogle children and since the other children are accounted for it is assumed to be a boarder.

Lewis Breyfogle asserts that George was the first of the Breyfogle brothers to move to Delaware Ohio and communities in the surrounding area.

"In his youth he settled in Delaware, Ohio, and later went to Columbus, that state, where his death occurred, and his remains were interred in Green Lawn Cemetery."
