Notes for Solomon P. BREYFOGLE

In describing Joshua D. and Jacob Breyfogel (sons of Jacob D.) it is written:

"In seperate companies, but sometimes traveling together on the trail, were their first cousins, all sons of Solomon; namely, Israel (born 1809), Solomon (born 1812) and Charles (born 1816)."

Lewis later contends:

"his descendents say that he went to California during the 1849 Gold Rush and never returned. Since the date of his death is specifically given, Flora Breyfogle Grumman must have had access to family records on that point. We do not know when Solomon went to California, but apparently it was not with the wagon trains that took his brothers Israel and Charles and their cousins, Joshua D. and Charles C., in 1849"

EDITORS NOTE:

Lewis does discuss this branch of the family in a general manner based on a newspaper clipping he received from Mrs. Louis H. Breyfogle of Kalamazoo, MI. the article concerned Harold and Ethel Breyfogle with their 13 children. This article and his contact with the wife of Harold's brother Carl led to his knowledge of several children of Willaim Milton. Since I am a descendent of William Milton and have first hand knowledge of our descent from William M. we will not completely reference the work of Lewis for this side of the family. We will say that the work of Lewis Breyfogle did spark activity in Iowa for recording the family history and appreciate his contribution to this effort.

Solomon P. Breyfogle is listed on the 1850 Census for the state of Iowa, Cedar County in Pioneer Township. The name is listed as Brifogle, obviously a miss spelling by the census taker, but this is the correct person. This census was taken 2 years prior to his death and his wife Margaret, and children William Milton, Solomon P. (our reference notes this to be Solomon W., further research is needed to establish correct middle name and/or initial), Esther Valberga, and George Jefferson, who was just 10 months old at the time.
