Notes for Ernest Edward Leroy MEYERDIRK

EDITORS NOTE:

The search for this family group began with a letter from a descendent of William Milton Breyfogle in which she mentioned the relationship between Cecile Breyfogle and Ernest E. Meyerdirk. A follow-up e-mail from one of the descendents of Ernest Edward Leroy Meyerdirk led to additional details but did not give a complete picture of the family history.

Ernest E. L. Meyerdirk and his wife Cecile I. are living in Sioux Township, Clay County, Iowa where Ernest is working as a laborer in a tile factory. They are renting a home and report that they have been married for 1 year. Cecile's brother, George M. Breyfogle, is living in the same household and working at the same factory. They are living next door to the tile factory foreman who also runs a boarding house. Among the boarders are 3 more tile factory workers. The census form is not specific on the location within Sioux Township, but maps indicate that this township includes the town of Spencer as well as Freeman (town no longer exists).

Ernest Edward Leroy Meyerdirk registered for the draft in Milford, Dickinson, IA, listing himself as married and living in Milford, IA. It is interesting to note that he spelled his first name as Ernist, and although it is difficult to read his occupation appears to indicate retirement, which seems odd since he was 30 years old at the time. Ernest lists himself as short in height, stout in build, and has blue eyes and brown hair. He references his dependents as "Wife - our boy."

Ernest and Cecile are living with their 7-year old son Dale on East 5th Street in Spencer, Clay, IA where Ernest works as a laborer in the cement business. It is assumed that this is the same tile plant he was working in during the 1910 census period. The surname on the census form was transcribed as Myerdish, but it is clearly Meyerdirk.

Ernest and Cecile have moved to East Main Street, Marshall, MN where Ernest is work as a cook in a café. There family has grown to include the children listed below:

Dale E. M. - son
Robert - son
Milton E. - son
Bonnie J. - daughter

Their son Dale is working as a night cook in a café and we assume this is probably the same business where his father is employed. The family is recorded on two forms and neither of these reveals any other extended family members so it is not known what caused the family to move to Minnesota. It is known that Thomas Marion Breyfogle and family moved from O'Brien County, IA about 1915 to settle in Marshall, MN, perhaps these cousins exchanged information about this small town in central Minnesota, thus enticing Ernest and Cecile to move north.
