Notes for Allen A. CONRAD

Allen A. and Luella G. (Breyfogle) Conrad are living and farming on a rented farm near Sheldon, IA in Floyd Twp., O'Brien County, Iowa with their 4 children. The census form records that they have been married 3 years, which differs from other family records and it also indicates that Luella has had 2 children with 2 living. The children are listed as follows:

Elwood - son, born April 1898
Esther - daughter, born December 1899
Merton - son, born February 1893
Leon - son, born, December 1895

With the children listed in this order it could be assumed that the first two are from this marriage and that Merton and Leon are from a second marriage.

SOURCE: 1900 Federal Census Floyd Twp., O'Brien, IA

Allen and Luella have moved to Oklahoma where they have purchased a farm in Rock Township, Noble County. Noble County is in the north central part of Oklahoma, which was part of the section of Oklahoma Territory, which was called the Cherokee Outlet, and when opened for non-Indian settlement was subject to massive settlement in the land run of 1893.

There family has grown to six children as follows:

Elwood - son
Ester - daughter
Idell - daughter
Orah - daughter
Lela - daughter
Viola - daughter

Merton and Leon are not listed with the family and they report a total of 6 children born to this marriage with 6 living. Their marriage is again listed as about 1897.

SOURCE: 1910 Federal Census Rock Twp., Noble, OK;

Allen and Luella have moved to Noble Township, which is the next township to the northeast of Rock Township. The form reports they are renting a farm and that they have had two more children:

Elwood - son
Ester - daughter
Idell - daughter (unreadable first name other than Idell, middle initial I)
Ora - daughter (name spelling corrected from earlier census)
Lela - daughter
Viola - daughter
Ivan - son
Elnora - daughter
Merton was found living as a roomer with the Harry and Margaret White family in Alta, IA. Merton is listed as working as a waiter in a restaurant. Unlike Merton, further searches for Leon did not produce any census files or WWI draft registration for him.

SOURCE: 1920 Federal Census Noble, Noble, OK; 1920 Federal Census Alta, Buena Vista, IA

Allen and Luella are listed as owning their farm in Noble Township with 5 of their children living with them. The 9th child (assuming the first two were Allen's from a previous marriage this would be Allen's 11th child), Rosalee was born about 1922.

Lela - daughter
Viola - daughter
Ivan - son
Elnora - daughter
Rosalee - daughter

This census form shows Allen as married for the first time at age 25, or about 1892. Luella was first married at age 18 or about 1896. This leads us to believe that this is Allen's second marriage and that this marriage was about 1896, which lines up with the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census forms.
