Liberty Cemetery is located on O'Brien County Road B62 (also known as 500th Street), 1 mile west of State Highway 59. This intersection is 1.2 miles south of the entrance to Calumet, IA. The grave is located in farthest east section of the cemetery.

The grave is marked with a military style headstone with the inscription: William Bryfogle, CO. I, 142 ILL. INF.

There is also a bronze marker beside the headstone that is marked: G.A.R. 1861-1865

This stone sets directly in front (west) of the marker for his wife and infant daughter.

Editors note:

The 1880 Census lists a William W. Breyfogle, age 30 on Page 14, supervisor's District No. 4, Enumeration District No. 159. Further research into the rest of the family leads to the conclusion that the person listed on this page is William Milton Breyfogle. It lists a wife Abbie (Abigail) age 22, a son Willie (William) age 5, and a daughter Maud (Margreta) age 3. These names and ages are close enough to other records that the general thought is that it is this William and the middle initial is an error in the census files.

A copy of the 1880 Census Index card is on file and it is indicated that Abbie was born in Canada, contrary to all other indications that she was born in New York (See 1885 census summary below). This census also lists William as being born in Illinois contrary to the 1885 census that indicates Ohio. there are enough errors on this census summary to conclude that the census taker may not have been as accurate in reporting as he should have been.

"D.A.W. Perkins "History of O'Brien Co." pages 138-139. William Breyfogle settled on sec. 20 (-page 139). Another interesting note is that C.H. Fields and his wife Phoebe (Myers) Fields lived in the same section as William and his wife Abigail (Myers) Breyfogle. Abigail and Phoebe are sisters. William Breyfogle is listed in the 1870 census is still living there in 1880. "
