Notes for Lionel Albert BREYFOGLE

Lionel served in the Army during World War II and following that worked at a packing plant in Sioux City, IA. At one time he owned and ran a cafe.

Lionel Albert Breyfogle Obituary

Lionel Albert Breyfogle was born to William A. and Ida Conrad Breyfogle in Alta, February 9, 1913. He received his education in Alta School after which he worked as a laborer on various farms and in Dahl's Blacksmith Shop.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army September 3, 1941. He served in the 107th Cavalry, then was transferred to Headquarters company IV Armored Corps. He was seriously injured in a vehicle accident and was given a medical discharge July 21, 1943. From the day of the accident Lionel did not have a day without pain from his injuries.

February 28, 1946, he married Jane Hetrick Stille in Sioux City, Iowa. To this union was born four children Marsha (Mrs. Richard) Mowry, of Marathon, Iowa; William P. of Caladonia, MN; Janeen Mae (Mrs. Roberto) Betancourt of Florida City, FL; and Sue Anne (Mrs. Denes) Ffrank of Wall Lake, Iowa.

The family moved to Marathon, Iowa in 1964 from Sioux City, and after the children were out of school, Lionel and Jane came back home to Alta in 1972.

Lionel was a member of the American Legion and the Storm Lake Area Rock Hounds.

After a lingering respiratory ailment Lionel passed away on Saturday, May 16, 1981 at the Buena Vista County Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his widow; his four children and three son-in-laws and daughter-in-law Sherrill; two stepsons, Jon H. Stille and wife Bertha of Roland, Iowa and stepdaughter Mrs. Carolyn Dugan of Table Rock, Nebraska. Three brothers Arthur of Sacramento, CA; Ivan and wife Grace of Storm Lake IA and Delfred and wife Margaret of Alta; and one sister Mrs. Opal Penrose of Sacramento, CA. Two sister-in-laws Mrs. Ethel Breyfogle, Holstein and Mrs. Alice Breyfogle of Storm Lake; his mother-in-law Mrs. Marvel Hetrick of Alta; nineteen grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 20th at Jones Funeral Home in Alta with Rev. A. F. Schneck officiating.

Music was provided by Julia Brundeeu and Paul Hill vocalist.

Pallbearers were Lionel's six nephews, Cecile Breyfogle of Storm Lake, Jim, Dean, Dale, Dan, and Dennis Breyfogle of Holstein.

Honorary bearers were Russell Paulson, Edward Larsen, Emil Carlson, Milo Erickson and Frank Wilt.

Military Rites were in charge of the V.F.W. Post No. 6172 of Alta.

Interment was in the Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home.
