Obituary Mrs. W. A. Breyfogle

Gold Star Mother Dies of Pneumonia

Mrs. W. A. Breyfogle Expires Friday at the Alta Hospital

On Friday morning of last week Mrs. W. A. Breyfogle, wife of Alta's well-known drayman, passed away at the Alta hospital, following an attack of pneumonia. Mrs. Breyfogle had not been strong for sometime, and but a few days before she contracted pneumonia, she was removed to the hospital for treatment, but in spite of all efforts gradually grew worse until she passed away.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon of this week from the Methodist church, with Rev. George A. Osborn in charge. Burial was made in Woodlawn cemetery. The following is the obituary as read at the services:

Ida May Breyfogle was born to Joseph C. and Catherine C. Conrad at Maynard, Iowa, on February 6, 1875 and departed this life on January 29, 1937 in Alta, Iowa, at the age of 61 years, 11 months and 24 days. She spent her girlhood days at Maynard, and when a young woman came to assist in the household duties of her brother's home at Primghar. There she met and later married William A. Breyfogle on September 29, 1897. to this union 13 children were born, nine of whom with the father survive, namely: Merle E., Of Alta, Arthur B. of Norfolk, VA, Roy, Harold, Carl W., Ivan J., Lionel A., and Delpherd all of Alta. Also one daughter Mrs. J. L. Penrose of San Francisco, California.

All except the daughter were in attendance at the funeral. There were 14 grandchildren, two sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Grace Cane of West Union, Iowa, and Mrs. Lucy [cutoff copy] of Constantine, Michigan, John {cutoff copy] of Oelwein, Allan A. Conrad {cutoff copy], Oklahoma and Ernest C. Conrad of Gentry, Arkansas, besides many other relatives and friends. Three children passed away in infancy and one son Forest McKinley passed away October 3, 1919.

Mrs. Breyfogle was a "Gold Star" mother of the Alta Unit of the American Legion Auxillary and a member of the Methodist church. She was a kind and faithful mother always willing to sacrifice for her family. She was a great lover of flowers and her flower garden was admired by all who visited or passed her home in the west part of Alta.
