Notes for Matilda Jane SMITH

Contributor writes:

There is some confusion in our records concerning the details of her birth while moving across Iowa in a covered wagon. The cities of Cedar Rapids, Clare, and Brooklyn are mentioned.

Sandra Jean Keeler (Breyfogle) remembers her as the person they would stop to see on their way to visit her maternal grandparents in Fraser, IA. She had fruit trees outside the front door and had a huge vegetable garden. Sandy remembers that Matilda always wore a large bib type apron.

Mrs. M. Keeler Dies; Funeral Services Friday

Mrs. Matilda Keeler, 89, who made her home at 418 Eleventh Avenue South, died at Lutheran Hospital early Wednesday, after a lingering illness. Funeral rites will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30 in the chapel of the Laufersweiler Funeral Home.

The Rev. H. Milo Hall, pastor of Riverside Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Mrs. Keeler, born near Cedar Rapids, May 16, 1868, was the former Matilda Smith. She came with her parents, the late Mr. And Mrs. Thomas Smith, as a child, to settle near Clare. From Clare the family later moved to Brooklyn, Iowa, where she received her schooling.

In 1892 she was married to John Keeler at Belle Plaine, Iowa, where they resided until 1903, when they moved to Fort Dodge. Mr. Keeler died in 1939.

Surviving Mrs. Keeler are two sons, John Keeler Jr. of Fort Dodge and Thomas Keeler of Estherville; and one daughter, Mrs. Eva Duckett of Lapeunte, Calif., and Mrs. Nancy Corbett of Grinnell, also survive.

Her husband, a son, three daughters, her parents, one brother and one sister preceded her in death.

Mrs. Keeler was a member of the Women of the Moose and Grace Rebekah Lodge.
