Notes for John Thomas BEVINS

Contributor writes:

Although I did not have a lot of contact with Uncle Jack over the past years, my childhood memories of Jack make me feel a strong connection to him.

Jack's passing makes me sad because I know the loss that family children will feel, and to me personally it means a connection to my youth has ended. Jack was one of those rough and tumble sort of guys, a former Marine, and he drove heavy earth moving equipment, all the things that impress a young boy growing up in the 1950's. Jack always had a story to tell and a hearty laugh and seemed to enjoy seeing us 4 boys when we visited Grandma and Grandpa Bevins'.

We all remember the wrestling match in which he said he'd take on all four of us at once. We were all teenagers, the two youngest being high school wrestlers, and all of us as big as he was. We heard later that although he never gave up during the match, that he was hardly able to get out of bed the next morning from that effects of us four pounding on him.

Mom's stories of growing up in the Bevins' family were full of stories of Jack and Roger and we all enjoyed hearing the stories over and over. These stories sometimes made Jack seem larger than life and I suppose that is why we thought of him with such respect.

Jack once gave us each a watch fob. It was a black leather strap with a bronze Caterpillar logo on it, and in Jack's words, "you'd better hold onto this, I had to fight five guys to get this for you." We all believed that Jack did fight the five guys, but Mom told us that he probably didn't actually fight the five guys but we should know that Jack went out of his way to get these for us. I still have mine, it is one of those childhood treasures that mean a lot to me and when I look at it I am reminded of this guy that would go out of his way to help others and I know under that tough exterior was a guy with a heart of gold.
