Notes for Thomas BEVINS

Thomas Bevins registered for the WWI Draft Registration in 1918 and placed an "X" for a middle name confirming that he did not have one. He was single, living with his parents in Meriden Twp, Cherokee, IA. He listed his occupation as a farmer working for Max Moah of Meriden Twp. His nearest relative was his father James Bevins and he marked his height as 5 foot 10 inches with gray eyes and black hair.

Editors Note:

Thomas was a butcher who would slaughter, dress, and haul beef and hogs to the local locker for farmers in the Quimby, IA area. He was also employed for several rendering plants during his life time.

A review of the 1930 US Federal Census finds Thomas Bevins and his wife Beulah living in Cherokee, IA in a rented home. Along with their children, James (KA Bill], Charolette, Robert, Dorothy, Betty Lee, they also had a boarder, June Swofford living with them.

Thomas was listed as a driver for the rendering plant.

Thomas and family are living in Ida Grove, Ida, Iowa in November of 1932 as this social note indicates:

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bevins and three children accompanied by the former's brother of Cherokee left Tuesday morning for Illinois to attend the funeral of their father Mr. Bevins.

Thomas Bevins

Quimby - Thomas Bevins, 70, died at 10:50 a.m. Sunday in Cherokee after a three-day illness. He had made his home in Quimby for the past 34 years.

Born May 16, 1900 at Meriden, he married Beulah Loche on Sept. 15, 1919 in Sioux City. He was employed at the Simonsen Plant for 32 years retiring in 1968.

Survivors are three sons, James of Stewart, Ill., John of El Monte, Calif. and Charles of Riverside, Calif.; four daughters, Mrs. Charlotte Simmons of Riverside, Calif., Mrs. Dorothy Jensen of Quimby, Mrs. Melvin (Betty) Breyfogle of Estherville and Mrs. Kenneth (Margaret) Davis of Palm Springs, Calif., 20 grandchildren; one brother, Sam Bevins of Cherokee; and one sister, Mrs. Arnold Ouart of Kewanee, Ill.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 1955, one brother, two sisters, and a son and daughter in infancy.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Quimby Methodist Church with Rev. Melvin Reth officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Boothby Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
