Day 1 Tour Map

Total distance traveled - 53 miles.

GPS data recorded on this day can be viewed at: Garmin Connect.

The first day started early in the morning, and after having breakfast we set out on our bikes to ride from Fort Collins to Big Bend Campground in the Poudre Canyon. Leaving Fort Collins, we rode Spring Creek Bike Trail to Overland Trail road, turned north, rode through Laporte, and then riding north on US Highway 287 until we came to the junction of Colorado Highway 14. We rode west on Highway 14 for the rest of the day until we came to our planned destination. The weather was favorable for riding bikes, only briefly did we encountering a few light rain showers, which barely dampened the road.

Doug took this picture of Dale, while he was riding north on HWY 287 towards the junction of CO HWY 14. The next three pictures were taken during a short rest periods while riding up the Poudre Canyon.

Midday Break at Rustic

Here's Doug pulling into the small mountain village of Rustic where we took our midday break.

Held up for road construction

After leaving Rustic we were forced to stop for road construction. Doug took this picture, as we sat on the steps of Home Moraine Park, while waiting for the construction crew to let us through. For safety purposes, they wouldn't let us ride our bicycle through the construction zone while they were working. Fortunately, we arrive here late in the day, and the construction crew was just completing their work for the day. We only had to wait about a half an hour before the heavy equipment was cleared from the road, and we were allowed to pass.

First Night Campsite

After setting up our first campsite, we ate supper, and took a short walk along the Poudre River to relax and reflect on our day's progress. Soon after sunset we climbed into our sleeping bags for the night.
